Depressing Rates for Filipino Freelance Writers

Disclaimer

Before you start thinking I'm out to contribute to the abundant number of hubs/lenses/blogs that give advice on freelance writing, I'm not. This is a rant piece :).

My experience with Freelance Content Writing

I've been writing on Odesk, a popular freelance site, for around 3 or 4  months now. Being a college graduate who jumped directly to law school after and who is still financially supported by his parents; I was initially extremely happy with the average dollar pay rates I saw there. Now that I think about it I was probably just blinded by the dollar rate pay.

I didn't know better and was just happy to be finally earning something. At one point I even contemplated doing more work so that I would be able to break away from my parents financial support. Now I find it funny that 3 years in law school actually dulled my math skills to the point that I could'nt even properly calculate my monthly income from freelancing.

I'm not claiming to be an expert writer, in fact I never even imagined that I would actually earn from writing. I've always considered my writing to be average but my grammar and research skills are at least decent (I hope... I might be blinded by my own ego though) enough to be payed more than what they're paying on these sites.

So what did I learn after my first month of freelancing?

Filipino freelance writers are paid depressingly low rates. Actually its not just Filipino writers but all non-English native speakers who do freelance work. I believe my first writing job payed $.25 or $.5 per 100 words when I joined Odesk. It was really low but I was new to the site and needed feedback so I took it. After a week of writing part time I ended the contract because I just couldn't justify wasting so much time for such low rates.

Until now freelance bidding sites still offer these low rates and it's just heartbreaking how a lot of my countrymen will jump at these. Just goes to show how bad my country's economy has become. What is even worse is that I commonly see project posts who ask for writers who are willing to work for $.5 for a 500 word article, sometimes the rate is even less and they make the job offers attractive by ordering in bulk.

It's just appalling how some employers will exploit a country's economic problems this way. They know that finding a job in my country is difficult so a lot of Filipinos have started joining freelance sites to make ends meet. Employers offer lower rates knowing that there are always more writers available; the law of supply and demand operating with ruthless efficiency.

What did I do to solve my problem?

Nothing. I'm still at Odesk and I still take extremely low paying jobs.

Now though I wont take any job that pays less than $1 per 100 words, yes I know its nothing to be proud of, but some money is better than none. I'm also currently trying to focus on becoming a BMR Writer. Build My Rank Posts are very easy to do and as long as I find decent paying employers who need them, these normally keep me happy.

I've also decided to focus more on this hubpage account to see if I can actually earn money here (ok so I did do something). I've read a lot of hubs that talk about how passive income can be a good way to earn if your willing to work at it. I hope to someday be one of the many satisfied hubbers who are able to just sit back and drink coffee while waiting for their checks. I don't expect to earn solely from this of course but the extra income would be really nice.

UPDATE 2012

I just wanted to update this and tell people who run into this article that I've already stopped writing BMR posts. Naturally because the site's already down.

I've also stopped freelancing and have decided to pour all my time to creating passive income.

One of my newest experiments is the Earn Money Online Philippines Blog. It's a blog I started about online jobs and earning passive income. I'm mainly trying to target Filipino freelancers as a market but the content will still be useful to even those who aren't from my country.

Very interesting thoughts expressed here. Yes I do agree with you, when you need the money it is hard not to accept the lower paying writing jobs.

Your English is excellent so there is no reason why you should have a problem earning a decent amount of money here on HubPages and with other internet writing.

I am at HubPages for 9 months. I read all the expert hubbers and took their advice. They said to keep reading other hubs and to learn all I could about Google Adsense, SEO etc. It took 6 months before I got a payment. The following month I earned two thirds of what it took 6 months to earn. Last month I earned three and a half times what I earned the previous month. So it can be done. I am looking forward to a very good payment for this month and we are only in the 2nd week.

Have you created any blogs? You can create a free Google Blog easily and put Google adverts on it with the same code as you have with HubPages. The same applies to Amazon.

Maybe you could use the subject that this hub is about. You could write it in English and add the Google Translator toolbar to the top of the Blog. That way your readers can translate it instantly into 52 languages. Offer good paying writing sites and give your evaluation of each. Most of them have affiliate Urls and if your readers join from your blog then that would be another stream in your income.

Great hub, keep up the good work!

Hiya truebluewriter, you've come to the right place. Hubpages is a good site for writing and earning money on Google Adsense and Amazon. On my first month I earned Zero but the second month I tipped $10+ earnings on Google Adsense and another $8+ on Amazon. I hope to hit payday in six months. You have to write more hubs. Do the 30hubs in 30days challenge. I did it and it helped me focus. Best of luck to you.

Have a nice day,

Rosie

:) thanks all for your tips and comments.

I'll do my best here on hubpages. I haven't exactly decided what I want to write about but for now I'm just going with whatever I feel like writing when I sit down hehe.

@viking305 Ill give that a shot. I've never written one, at least none that I successfully updated hehe. Hubpage is actually my first venture into this kind of thing.

@Rosie2010 I'll use this month to write as many hubs as I can then. Hopefully I'll see some financial movement on my affiliates by next month lol. Even if it's low as long as I actually earn something, it'll already be a good start for me

@stars439 Thanks starts :)

Hey Kababayan. Took me a while to read your hub. Welcome to HP! :)

I noticed the same thing when I started freelance writing. Actually, I went into academic writing first (a - la Recto ang dating). The pay was good (average of $5 per 250 - word page). I stayed there for 2 years but last December, I resigned because I lost interest in it and I didn't like ghost writing for students. I'm in eLance and I noticed the same thing. Actually the worst rates I've seen so far are in freelancing.com. Haven't gone into oDesk though I have an account there.

Lately, I've been getting out of the freelance writing stuff. I'm into transcription and blogging now. They pay relatively better than just simply freelance writing.

Just a suggestion. If you believe that your writing is worth better than $1 per 500 letter word, stick to your believed rate. Sure you'll get less jobs but you'll get the more lucrative ones and they will make up for all those lost bids.

Oh and I agree with Rosie. stick to HP and you'll get more and more payouts. I got 3 payouts last year (although the first was a carryover from 2009) plus, hopefully, another one on the way. :)

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice emievil.

I am actually getting payed for more now. I currently have 2 employers who decided to keep me on outside of Odesk and pay me a lot more. The $1 per 100 words is now my low end rate, one I'm willing to take just to be productive. If I see anything less I don't bid on the job because it's just nor worth it.

And I am experimenting on Hubpages right now actually. I'm testing some SEO techniques on some pages to see how they'll rank on google. I plan to devote a week or two just to writing hubs... right now though I'm still swamped with work and I dont want to lose the employers coz they pay well so my hub plans have been put on hold
